Bishop’s Cross Award
John (Ted) Ederer
St. John’s, Kirkland

John Ederer, known by Ted, embodies the Spirit of Christ by living a deeply spiritual life of love of God, a love of people, and effective leadership at St. John’s in Kirkland.

Ted’s love of the Episcopal Church began as a boy in his local parish and was furthered by his service as a delegate at Episcopal Youth Convention in Ohio.

Ted leads a well-rounded life that integrates his love of God, love of others and effective leadership and service. He is deeply spiritual and fosters that in others, by leading two prayer groups, and a Bible Study. He serves as Lector, LEM, and has served as a member of our praise band. Ted also served as President of the Diocesan Cursillo Secretariat and on the National Episcopal Cursillo Committee.

Ted’s deep commitment to Christ has manifested in years of selfless service to the diocese over the past forty plus years. He has served on and taken leadership positions on Diocesan Council and the Standing Committee, the Cathedral Chapter and at Diocesan Convention. He also served on the insurance and personnel committees. His service to the diocese enhanced his capacity to serve and lead at St. John’s, including his role as parish Chancellor and his leadership in a men’s dinner group. Ted was Treasurer for many years, continues as an active member of the Finance Committee, and a three-year term on Vestry, including a year as Junior Warden. Rather than retiring quietly, he agreed to chair the two-year celebration of St. John’s Centennial.

Ted’s love and care for others is expressed in his attention to members and newcomers alike. He regularly greets people and welcomes new people and visitors. He regularly includes children and young people in conversation. Ted, with his wife Jeanne, makes a point of staying connected with former church members who have moved away and those who may have drifted away from St. John’s.

It is fitting that an award that was established at the centenary of diocese be awarded to a person leading St. John’s centennial looking not only at the past but into the future, and whose life exemplifies the spirit of Christ. This is indeed true of Ted Ederer, whom I am pleased to award the Bishop’s Cross.
